About the Award

Columbia Business School’s Commitment to Diversity in Business Education Award acknowledges and celebrates the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our community and in the academy. This achievement is awarded annually to individuals from the Columbia University community who are pursuing a doctoral degree in business and who—by their background, life experience, service, and/or scholarship—demonstrate a commitment to a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive future.  

Award Recipients will:

  • Receive financial assistance to defray costs associated with applying to doctoral programs in business.
  • Have access to faculty mentoring designed to assist with graduate school preparation and applications.

Awards will be made at the discretion of the Columbia Business School (CBS) Vice Dean for Research and the CBS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative—which may choose to grant multiple awards, one award, or no award in any one year.

 

2022-2023 Award Amount

  • The financial award for 2022-2023 will be $1200
  • Columbia Business School will name up to 12 recipients in 2022-2023.

 

Requirements

To be considered for the award, candidates must be in the process of applying to doctoral programs in business and be one of the following:

  • Current Columbia University or Barnard undergraduate who is on track to receive a degree by Spring 2023.
  • Current Columbia University master’s or postbaccalaureate student who is on track to graduate by Spring 2023.
  • Hold an undergraduate or master’s degree or postbaccalaureate certificate from Columbia University

Note: Candidates need not apply to Columbia Business School to be eligible for the award. 

 

Application Process

Interested applicants should email the materials listed below with the subject line "Commitment to Diversity in Business Education Award Application" to the Office of the Vice Dean for Research at [email protected] and cc the DEI Office ([email protected]).

  • A list of doctoral programs to which the applicant intends to apply
  • College transcript(s) (unofficial is acceptable)
  • A paragraph describing the applicant’s motivation for applying to a doctoral program and the intended course of study (250 words)
  • A paragraph describing how the applicant’s background, life experience, service, and/or scholarship exhibit a commitment to greater diversity, equity, and inclusion (250 words)

  • Deadline for submission: November 1, 2022
  • Award decisions: On a rolling basis
  • One-on-one mentoring: Commences in early December 2022
  • Award payments: Shortly after decisions are made
