New York City – Columbia Business School today announced the launch of AI+Healthcare, designed to transform how artificial intelligence is deployed, governed, and scaled across the healthcare industry. As AI tools evolve, Columbia Business School’s AI+Healthcare will convene faculty experts and their research, student organizations, alumni, and industry leaders to determine how AI can responsibly transform diagnosis, care delivery, operations, and mental health.
“Our AI in Business Initiative is a one-of-its-kind, innovative approach where we will dive into how AI is reshaping industries and societies worldwide. Through our first series, AI+Healthcare, we’re bringing together expertise across our school and community to explore how AI can truly make a difference in medicine, including helping doctors, improving patient care, better managing hospitals, and tackling some of the toughest challenges in healthcare today,” said Dean Costis Maglaras, Columbia Business School.
The AI revolution in healthcare is already under way. AI can read medical images, flag at‑risk patients, optimize staffing, transcribe care notes, and support mental health care. At Columbia Business School, faculty are already exploring what that future looks like in practice – from digital twin research that models patients to predict outcomes and test treatments before they are delivered, to a breadth of mental health research examining how AI affects workers, youth, and the broader economy.
Columbia Business School’s AI+Healthcare series, part of the business school’s AI in Business Initiative integrates cutting-edge research, curriculum innovation, and deep industry expertise to bridge theory and practice. This initiative, is premised on a simple but urgent question: How do we move from the promise of AI to real-world impact in ways that are safe, equitable, and sustainable? Grounded in the conviction that meaningful improvements in health outcomes require the integration of technological innovation with business strategy, policy, and execution, the series focuses on translating promise into practice. As the only Ivy League business school in New York City, Columbia Business School will leverage its extensive network and location in the world’s global hub for healthcare and health tech to generate insights that are both novel and usable in transforming the industry.
AI+Healthcare will focus on three core themes:
- Better Patient Care, More Efficiently Delivered
- Policy & Decisionmaking: Creating Governance and Trust
- AI’s Transformative Impact on Mental Health and Wellness
“Our AI+Healthcare is taking place at this important intersection of healthcare, science, technology, and leadership,” said Carri Chan, Faculty Director, Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management Program, Columbia Business School. “This series will be a source for expert insights, cutting-edge research, and forward-looking conversations that are driving the future of healthcare.”
The initiative builds on the School’s Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management Program and will integrate world‑class faculty research across multiple areas of healthcare AI. Professors leading this work include Boaz Abramson, who studies the impact of AI on mental health; Stephan Meier, who studies workforce wellbeing as AI is adopted in healthcare settings; Jing Dong, who develops data-driven models to improve hospital efficiency and patient flow; Xuelin Li, who examines AI-driven clinical decision support at the point of care; Dante Donati, who studies youth mental health in digital environments; Sandra Matz, who investigates the psychological and social impact of digital data; and many more. These research initiatives, along with innovative student ventures and alumni leadership, are turning insights into tangible improvements in patient care, hospital operations, and mental health support.
